Marine Corps League

Battle Born Detachment #672

October 2011 Newsletter

Message from Commandant Richard Olsen:

Greetings Marines,

I wish to thank all members for their participation at the October meeting. A lot of detachment business was completed. We need all members to attend our next two monthly meetings, because several important topics will be discussed and voted on. Remember to bring all of your left over Halloween candy to our meeting on 1 November, so we can prepare jars to pass out the candy at the Veterans Day parade.

Keep looking for new members, and keep looking for our Devil Pup candidates.

Rich

Minutes from the Previous Meeting:

Richard apologized for the newsletter coming out late, and hopes everyone has been able to read the September Newsletter. David Walker made a motion to accept the newsletter as published, and this was seconded by Tom Bickert and John Warmouth. The members voted to accept the newsletter as published.

Ken Santor stated he needs a print copy of the newsletter for the Detachment files. John Glatthar will work on making a print version available.

Correspondence:

Richard read to all members the response from the National Judge Advocate concerning the detachments complaint against Nevada State Commandant Richard Hoery, and the apology letter written by Hoery. The National Judge Advocate has agreed with our request to end this complaint, and to have it withdrawn. This case is officially closed.

Richard briefed all members about a Susanville, CA  MCL member who has some horses he has trained to use as a "Riderless Horse" in parades and funerals. His name is Phil Raglen, and he will participate in the Reno Veterans Parade behind our MCL trailer. He will use two horses, and has Marine lettering on the saddles.

In February 2012 the VA will sponsor a Veterans concert for all veterans and their wives/mates. This will be very similar to the one this year that was given by Gary Lewis and his Playboys. The artist is scheduled to be Eric Tipton, and he will perform at the Grand Sierra Hotel at 8:00pm Feb 13th. Everyone will need a ticket, but the tickets are free.

The VA hospital will put on a Halloween Carnival for the veterans living in the VA hospital. It will be on Saturday, October 29th, from 2-4pm. Please call Richard if you can volunteer for these 2 hours.

The Reno VA Hospital will sponsor the 2013 National Veterans Art Festival, and the hospital will need volunteers during that time. Dates will be announced later. Please help if you will be in town.

The Reno VA Hospital has started a program called " No Veteran Dies Alone." This is a hospice environment, and veterans are needed to volunteer to sit with a patient in his final days, so he will not be alone. No medical procedures will be required to be preformed, just sitting with the patient in his room at the VA hospital. Anyone interested please call Richard for more information.

Administrative officials at the VA Hospital have asked all veterans to please be patient during the completion of the many construction projects at the VA. Park where you can, when you can.

The Veterans Day Parade will be held at 11:00am on November 11th. The parade starts from the corner of Court St and South Virginia, and our detachment will have Fred's truck pulling his trailer. The horses of Phil Raglen will follow the trailer. We hope all members will attend the parade and ride on the trailer.

Paymaster’s Report:

Ken reported income for the month of September of $1117. Expenses were a total of $465.56.  If any member wants more information about the income/expense statement, call Ken.

Report of League/Family Members in Distress:

Ken reported that Bonnie Holtzer is doing fine so far

Report of Officers:

Report of Officers: Fred Vigil thanked all detachment members that showed up at the Air Race Victims Memorial Ceremony held at Idlewild park. Attending were Fred, Ken Santor, Don Enea, Paul Weller, and Richard Olsen. All members were in formal dress, and we all looked sharp.

Richard briefed all members about new detachment business cards. He has researched several places in Reno , and has found a printer who is having a sale on color print cards, with color on both sides. Discussion followed, and the detachment voted to purchase new business cards. Richard will try to get the cards ready for the next meeting.

Richard briefed all about the Department of Nevada Mid-Winter Conference to be held in Hawthorne, NV on Jan 14th at the El Captain Hotel. So far 4 members have signed up, and if anyone else wants to go, contact Richard ASAP.

Our detachment has been informed by the Dept of NV that we need to have a "Toys for Tots" coordinator. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Richard.

Our detachment is still looking for a person to become our historian/public affairs coordinator. Please contact Richard if you would like to have this position.

Report of standing committees:

Report of standing committees: Budget. This years Air Races were canceled after the air crash, and we do not know how much income the detachment will receive from JP for our beverage tent hours. We hope to have a figure by the Nov meeting. Discussion followed as to what programs we may be able to fund.

Hot Sauce: Plenty in stock, and the next event is the Home Show on Oct 22-23.

Devil Pups: We already have 2012 devil pup funds in our account, so next year is covered. Please find suitable candidates 14-17 years old, and forward their name to Bob Livingston. We need 3 children.

Cemetery: The irrigation water is turned off, and no planting action until spring. Tom Bickert volunteered to raise and lower the flags at the Fernley MCL 155 Howitzer over the MC Birthday, and Veterans Day.

Obituaries
None

Old/Unfinished Business:

Warrior Program, this is at Camp Pendleton, and Fred briefed all about this. Discussion followed, and it was decided to table this idea until we find out about our income from J.P.

New Business:

Tom Bickert asked about "Operation Stand Down", the program for homeless Vets. The next "Stand Down" will be Sept 2012. No funds were allocated till we know what income we will receive from JP. Discussion followed, and this item was tabled for now.

Don Enea informed the members he has a extra light blue shirt, like the one's Jim Snyder found for the Recruiter Marines, and like the one we all had for the socks drive at Wal-Mart. If you want the buy this shirt, call Don.

John Yuspa joined as a new associate member, he has been in Reno for about one year, and he wants to help out and lend support to our detachment. All the members welcome him to the MCL family.

Good of the League:

Richard briefed the detachment on the dress code for all of our events. The codes are, Casual, Informal, Formal, and Evening dress. The dress code was handed out to all members present at the meeting. It will be handed out again at the November meeting.

John Glatthar proposed to have a Rock Island 1911 semi-auto pistol for a raffle, like we did for the M1 this year. Discussion followed. A total of 200 tickets were proposed to be sold.

John Glatthar asked all members to not ask him to forward other members messages for them. This is very time consuming, and each member can do this himself. John volunteered to help any member set up a batch email to all MCL members, and this should solve the problem.

John has redone the MCL Application for New Members that was on our website. It is easy to use, easy to download. Member dues are $31 per year.

Don Enea briefed all about the Evelyn Mount programs, and how she and her staff will help all veterans and their families. On Friday afternoons at 1:00pm Evelyn distributes food from her house for any needy family, and in the winter season, also distributes coats.  Remember there is also another food bank at Yori and Gentry that provides Veterans food on Tuesday nights from 6:30- 8:00pm for $5.

Ken Santor opened nominations for the 2012 Detachment Officers. As Nominated:

  • Commandant: Fred Vigil

All members please bring all left over Halloween candy to the Nov meeting so that we can arrange to have the candy given out during the Veterans Day Parade.

Ken Santor has a few tickets left for the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, Nov 5th. Cost $60 each.

Kimberly Wood introduced her guest Stan Benson. He is a retired career Marine, lived in San Jose, moved to Reno recently, and was a pilot while on active duty. Stan gave a brief talk to the detachment. We all hope to have Stan join as a full time member
