Marine Corps League

Battle Born Detachment #672

September 2011 Newsletter

Message from Commandant Richard Olsen:

Greetings Marines,

I want to thank all members for their attendance at the September meeting. I am getting this newsletter out to all members later than I had hoped to, due to some family issues, and due to my working the special election for the 2nd Congressional District, and working the Reno Air Races. I hope to see all members at the October meeting.

Thanks for your understanding.

Rich

It was discussed to have on the web site that all new/current members may not use credit/debit cards to pay for their membership.

Minutes from the Previous Meeting:

John Warmouth proposed to accept the minutes of the August meeting as published. Tom Bickert seconded the motion, and it was voted on to accept them as published.

Correspondence:

Richard Olsen reported that he had received a letter from the State Commandant concerning the successful Boise Convention in August.

The next National MCL Convention in 2012 will be held in Alabama. News from the Boise convention:

A) The Red MCL cover remains as the only unique identifier of MCL members and when wearing the Red MCL cover no pins or other non authorized attachments are to be worn/attached to the Red Cover. When the MCL member is wearing the appropriate cover, they are considered to be in uniform.

B) The white duty belt may only be worn while performing the duties of the Sgt at Arms, or as a member of a Color Guard or Honor Guard and only with a white uniform shirt, either long or short sleeve.

The Dept of Nevada is trying to standardize the State patch that is worn on our Red MCL jackets using the Battle Born Patch as the example for all state detachments.

The Mid-Winter conference for the Dept of Nevada will be held at the El Captain Hotel in Hawthorne, NV at 09:00 hours on January 14th, 2012.

Please contact Richard or Ken ASAP if you plan to attend, as we have to give an accurate account of attendance by 15 October.

Paymaster’s Report:

Ken reported income for August of $936. Expenses were $405.74 for August. Any member has the right to look at the paymaster records if they want to see any more detail of the detachment's financial records. Contact Ken Santor if you want to arrange this.

Report of League/Family Members in Distress:

None

Report of Officers:

Ken reported to all about a letter he received concerning our contribution to the Devil Pup program, and how we have been a prime supporter of the Devil Pups. This letter was very complementary toward Detachment#672, and our continuing financial support.

Fred Vigil reported to all about the Wounded Warrior Program in the Camp Pendleton area. Fred's daughter has helped in this project, and has asked for our detachment's help in supporting this worthy program. Several members spoke in favor of the proposal, and recommendations were made to vote on funding this project at the October meeting. An amount of $200-$300 was suggested. Old/Unfinished Business:

Tom Bickert suggested our detachment have a procedure to prevent any happening such as was currently going on in Las Vegas. Discussion followed, and our budget/reports should prevent any repeat of the problems in Vegas.

There was no July meeting, and 4 days before the August meeting Richard received a letter from the National Commandant awarding our detachment an award for the success of the 1/5 Socks drive. Richard briefed all about the background of the letter, and how the letter and the Award Certificate was passed around to everyone. At the September meeting the National Ribbon that goes with the National Award was passed out to all present members.

Richard apologized for the informality of the presentation.

Fred Vigil briefed all on the need for a dress code. Any time we as a detachment have a function as representatives of the Marine Corps or the MCL, we need to look sharp and squared away. Richard will work on adopting a dress code and present it to the members. When the dress code is informal, all members must still have neat and clean clothes. Also we as a detachment need to arrive at all functions on time.

Good of the League:

The Marine Corps Birthday Ball will be held at the Peppermill on Nov 5th, and tickets are $60 per person. Please buy your tickets from Ken or another MCL member, so our detachment receives the credit.

The annual Marine Corps Birthday Cake Cutting Ceremony at the VA Hospital will be held on Nov 10th after the noon meal. More discussion will be at the next meeting.

Don Enea was presented with his Life Member pin by Richard.

Important: All MCL members are advised to leave the front of the VFW Hall bar area at 19:00 hours so the VFW can hold their meetings at 19:00 in that location, and have privacy and quiet. All members are to go to the back room where we have our monthly meetings.

Our detachment is in need of a publicity/historian chairman, and any member interested in this position please see Richard or Ken.

The election of the detachment officers for the year 2012 will be held at the November meeting. The nomination of officers for those positions will start at the October meeting, so please attend and be willing to serve the detachment as you are able. At the December meeting the new officers will be installed, and we will have our annual Christmas dinner.

Don Enea suggested that Evelyn Mount and her organization may be able to help with the veterans food bank, and with the programs for homeless vets. He volunteered to brief the detachment at the October meeting.
