January 2012 Newsletter

Message from Commandant Fred Vigil:

Greetings Marines,

I wish to thank all members for their attendance and participation at the January meeting. The confidence you have shown in me by your voting me as the detachment Commandant is a trust I will hold dear, and I will perform my duties to the best of my ability.

I, and all of the officers of the detachment, serve at the members request, and all officers need and expect input from the membership. The goals and results of the detachment is the combination of all members effort. Please make your wishes known, and contribute as much time to our programs as you can.

Semper Fi,

Fred Vigil

Fred Vigil wants Sgt at Arms John Warmouth to keep the detachment advised if John needs any type of help around the house, so John can have his foot back to normal as soon as possible.

Report of Officers:

Ken briefed all that the MCL mid-winter conference in Hawthorne has been rescheduled to 25 Feb. 2012. Several Dept of NV officers were sick and could not make the original date of 14 Jan. 2012

Richard Olsen requested all members keep him updated with current emails and phone numbers, so the contact list of the detachment will always be correct.

Richard Olsen passed out $5 discount coupons to those members who want to attend the Wild Sheep Foundation Convention on Jan 20,21,22.

Michael Rios briefed all about the successful food drive for the holidays that the Evelyn Mount Food Bank completed. He had volunteered to help in the program, and the food drive was a great help to all the needy families.

Fred Vigil informed the members of his trip to the Stead Marines to deliver all the toys collected at the Christmas party/dinner. The toys were given to 1st Sgt. Noel, and to SGT Garcia to be included in the "Toys for Tots" collected by the Stead Marines. The Stead Marines were extremely grateful for all the toys.

Fred and Ken thanked all for the food and support all members showed at the detachment Christmas party. All members and family had a great dinner.

Tom Bickert proposed that there be extra media coverage for the Christmas Wreath Across America. This program is at the Fernley Cemetery, and he feels there needs to be more coverage of this event. Discussion followed with several ideas proposed to get more coverage.

Tom also advised all that the gasoline prices in Hawthorne are much higher that in Reno or Fallon, and any person going through Hawthorne should fill up in Fallon to save money.

Good of the League:

John Glatthar advised the members that the "Pay Pal" account is not feasible, and is not working for us. He proposed a credit card account instead, with a manual swipe feature. Discussion followed, and the subject will again be discussed at the Feb meeting.

Ken and John Glatthar informed all that the drawing for the 1911 pistol raffle will be on Memorial Day, at the VFW.

All members are requested to send John Glatthar pictures of their active duty days. Also John wants any old USMC pictures.

Pam Guerin, Bob Sohrt's daughter, spoke of her thanks to John Glatthar for his great job as Web Sgt, and his effort and attention to detail in the monthly newsletter. All members gave John a well deserved round of applause for his time and effort as the Web Sgt and publisher of the newsletter.

Justin Brandenburg spoke to the detachment about the services offered by the Reno Vet Center. Justin is the manager of the Reno Vet Center, located at 5580 Mill St., phone #775-323-1294. The Vet Center is a branch of the VA, and the Vet Center was started to help vets returning from the Viet Nam War. The US now has about 300 Vet Centers through the 50 states. Reno has 4 full time consular officers to help vets with marriage problems, bereavement, jobs, health care issues, etc.

Justin and the employees work with all veteran organizations. In Nevada, there are 3 Vet centers, one in Reno, one in Henderson, and one in Las Vegas. The budget for the Vet Center is thru the VA. Please talk with any Vet you know that you think may need help, and refer them to Justin.

1st Sgt. Noel has advised us that he has seen many cases of veterans who are having difficulty after release from active duty, and the Reno Vet Center, under the leadership of Justin, is a valuable asset to help those person.
